The United Arab Emirates has contributed 700 metric tonnes of maize grain as part of a larger donation of 8,530 tonnes, supporting the government’s Food Deficit Mitigation Strategy (FDMS) aimed at addressing food insecurity among vulnerable communities.
This timely intervention highlights the alarming food insecurity affecting communities already reeling from extreme weather events and a relentless climate crisis.
Minister of Public Service, Labor, and Social Welfare Edgar Moyo received the donation, stating it aligns with the government’s Food Deficit Mitigation Strategy (FDMS), designed to combat food insecurity among vulnerable populations.
“The distribution of maize is a contribution to a programme that is already existing; we have a distribution plan in place that is already running,” he explained.
However, Moyo clarified that the donated grain would be milled into mealie meal before distribution, adhering to established protocols to ensure that aid reaches those in need.
UAE Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jassim Mohammed Al Qasimi, hailed the partnership as more than a mere act of charity.
“Zimbabwe and the UAE have transcended the bond of brotherhood, forging a partnership that stands as a testament to our shared aspirations,” he said.
“Zimbabwe and the UAE have evolved beyond mere sibling ties, embracing a robust alliance that exemplifies mutual growth and collaboration.”
The Ambassador pledged to continue supporting Zimbabwe to ensure no one and no place is left behind.
