A leading Zimbabwean seed producer has stepped up preparations for the next farming season, with the majority of its maize seed already in storage.
Valley Seed Company, a key supplier under the government’s climate-resilient Pfumvudza programme, has confirmed that 80% of its maize seed varieties are secured ahead of the 2025–26 summer cropping season.
Business director Tich Maponga stated that the company is working to ensure farmers have access to high-quality, drought-tolerant seeds as the country prepares for another potentially dry season.
“Almost all our maize seed is in storage. What remains are traditional grains, which take longer to harvest because most are still hand-picked by smallholder farmers,” Mr Maponga explained during a media tour on Tuesday.
He added that the company maintains strict quality control, working closely with contract growers and deploying dedicated teams to oversee seed collection and handling.
The government’s Pfumvudza programme promotes conservation agriculture through the use of small plots, drought-resistant crops, and improved farming practices, as part of efforts to enhance food security in the face of climate change.
